23-Feb-12 Jim Goodin I must apologize, I have grown way out of touch with this community largely from being absorbed in others, a lot at ImprovFriday these days. That said two recent happenings have made me think of the CT, both associated with the ReUse project I produced in 2008. Matt [Davignon] recently played a track on his new radio show out of SF at http://www.savekusf.org/ and two, I recently thought of and got in touch with a participating artist, Rinus van Alebeek, who did a cool environmental kind of ambience analog recording. Beyond ReUse I believe I have participated in two more records. I would like to produce another and will think about it this year. I hope the community is still happening, what projects are on tap?
07-May-11 Nick Robinson CT Harmonics has failed utterly, miserably and pathetically to meet it's own October deadline (that's October 2010 folks!) However, the project is now complete and ready for listening.

It's very sad that of the 17 who signed up the the project, only 9 have delivered anything - most of the others haven't even communicated. Please bear this in mind before signing up to future projects.
19-Aug-10 Nick Robinson CT Harmonics is proving very popular, so we've decided to set no limit on the number of contributors - we'll just expand to a double or even treble CD along the lines of Woodstock or Yessongs ;)

Deadline is currently end of October, but this may be delayed slightly (via PCM42) - perhaps we can release 1 album by then, another later on?
02-Aug-10 Nick Robinson Reverb is now completed and ready for download. Thanks to all the musicians who contributed (and allowed me to mix them together!) plus Michael, prompt as ever with the technical end of things.
08-May-09 Nick Robinson CT Quartet is complete and will be posted soon. Thanks to all contributors!
22-Aug-08 Anders Östberg Two tracks from CT-Bugs, 'The Fruit Flys Lament' and 'Cikadas and Crickets', presented on Swedish national public radio, August 14. One track from CT-Bugs 'Up in the Trees' presented on Swedish national public radio, August 21.

15-Jul-08 Nick Robinson CT Zodiac is now complete - I hope you enjoy it. Please leave comments about the tracks if you like them!
14-Jul-08 Jim Goodin I'm participating on the Brian Eno influenced Generative work currently in production under the direction of Fabio Anile. Launch date is fall 2008.
25-Mar-08 Fabio Anile CT-Generative is starting

"CT-GENERATIVE" is based on the Brian Eno' s approach to generative music.
The idea behind this project is to get a 74 min. long CD starting from a different small amount of total recording.

Generative approach will work in two moments: composition and listening experience.
Spreading different lenghts tracks as loops in a multitrack software will will automatically create different crosspoints between all the layered sound files, so evolution of the piece will result unpredictable.
Before burning the final mix, i'll set in it how many CD marks it will be possible, so to split the 74 min. long "piece" in several "tracks" (called: #1;#2;#3;#4, etc..)
Either the final CD, either the mp3 playlist can be audible in two ways:
- as a continous 74 min. long CD (generated starting from a different amount of recorded material), or
- activating the "random" function that ALL CD players and digital players have. In this way single blocks of the final mix, may be audible in different sequences, adding every time a different listening experience.

10-Mar-08 Michael Peters Mark your calendars: on May 31st, 2008, there will be a Livelooping Festival in Cologne/Germany, and there are no less than five CT musicians among the ten liveloopers. All info at www.livelooping.de
09-Feb-08 Nick Robinson CT- birds is now complete and online - thanks to all who contributed and MP fur Leitung Arbeit.
20-Nov-07 norelpref The "deadline" for CT-Acoustic II has been moved to February14, 2008 to give everyone more time to refine their creations.

I've received two tracks thus far and am very impressed. This will prove to be a great CD.....
20-Nov-07 norelpref Teisha is now banned is now complete! CDs have been distributed and the tracks are now online in three different places:

The Internet Archive

Teisha is Now Banned Website
(The Teisha website will remain an ongoing repository for various efforts to turn spam into art. )

And right here.

Tracks over at archive.org are available in multiple formats. Anyone wanting to download the "non-lossy" versions can download the .flac files.

Thanks and congratulations to everyone who contributed to this project.
19-Nov-07 Nick Robinson the deadline for CT-birds has been extended by mutual request - some of the tracks needed more tweetment. We're now aiming at sometime mid January 08
30-Aug-07 norelpref The Caligari DVD packages are finished! They will be shipped tomorrow to our fearless leader Rob Switzer and then he'll distribute them to group members. The finished work is a fascinating aural and visual experience. Kudos to all who contributed to this project.
30-Aug-07 norelpref Teisha is now banned is in the homestretch. A site dedicated to the project has been created, and will be host to project files as well as future tracks created from spam.

Teisha Website
30-Aug-07 norelpref CT-Acoustic is nearly full; actually we're now at 12 members, but I'm thinking if we drop the time allowed for each piece to 5 minutes, we can accomodate a couple more.
07-Aug-07 Nick Robinson CT-birds is now up and running - interest was so high that we've got two groups. One will be making music using *only* the sound of birds (manipulated or otherwise). The second will allow people to play instruments alongside the birds if they wish. Target date is late November, so you should have 24 new tracks to enjoy over Christmas!
25-Jun-07 Krispen Hartung After its original inception on December 18, 2005, Project MRI is now live and ready to review! The project features tracks from eight artists, all of whom manipulated MRI machine recording samples with various effects and audio software, using the output as their final composition, or using it as a backdrop for adding additional recorded tracks from various instruments.
04-Apr-07 Nick Robinson The CT - Paper Music project is now complete. Many thanks to the musicians who contributed and to the CT head honchos, who kept me on track and showed me the way. It's not as hard as you might think, so start a project today!
30-Jan-07 Michael Klobuchar CT-GREAT SPEECHES is an excellent addition to the COLLECTIVE.....FABIO and COMPANY should be very proud of their work on this project.....although a bit dark at times this was a wonderful listen.....thank you one and all!
19-Jan-07 Fabio Anile CT-Great Speeches is online !

First time I started to think at this project was when I worked on a film about the Apollo 11 moon landing. The interesting part of that work was to think to the speech as a part of the music, the leading part. Nothing new compared to My life in a bush of ghost (Brian Eno - David Byrne, 1981), but it was new for me experimenting the Eno-Byrne creative process.
I started to work on other speeches and when I realized that it would take most part of the time ive to spend for music, I open it to the CT-Collective.

I'm now very proud to announce the publishing of the CT-Great Speeches project, my first experience as a CT-Collective project coordinator.
It was an interesting experience where all members work hard to get the best ideas, musical and technical approach and inspiration.

A "listening guide" is available in the Great Speeches web page

Thanks to all the partecipants !

17-Oct-06 norelpref The Caustic Continuum, a collaborative podcast has released it's first episode, "Bill Stickers is Innocent." A number of CT-Collective members contributed their talents to the mix. Episode 2 is under way, and people are encouraged to join the fold and submit their narratives. Participation is casual and sporadic, so there's no heavy commitment here.

The podcast and more information about the series can be found at the website:

25-Sep-06 Michael Peters CT-Radio!
The start page and the projects page contain links to the "radio" page where you can launch the CT-Radio stream, a complete mp3 playlist of all CT tracks, randomized daily.

The page contains a list of all tracks from the current show - this is useful if you want to look up artist / trackname of the currently streamed track (when playing a stream, some mp3 players omit the id3 tags of the mp3s and don't display artist and trackname)
12-Sep-06 Nick Robinson 6 people already signed up for paper music - I'm accepting the first 10 contributors, but will keep a reserves list in case people drop out. Deadline end of January, but I'd recommend finishing the music by Christmas, have a serious relax, then mix it early January as part of your new years resolution ;)

14-Apr-06 Tim Nelson Tim Nelson has released a CD called 'Rantai' which explores tangents inspired by his work with the Chain Tape Collective. The album consists partly of his most popular CT tracks (available for download on this site), but is mostly a collection of previously-unreleased CT tracks, remixes, alternate versions and new material created during the recording of Nelson's CT contributions.

14-Mar-05 Tim Nelson CT-Live project

Group home page: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CT-Live
Group email address: CT-Live@yahoogroups.com

Concept: A live concert recording documenting an event which never
actually took place. Using live performance recordings* as source
material, contributors will edit and construct musical pieces which
will be collated to flow as one virtual concert.

Project leader: Tim Nelson
Mastering: Tim Nelson
Art Direction: Tim Nelson with contributions from each participant
Distribution: open for volunteer(s)
Mailing list co-moderator: open for a volunteer

Number of participants: 12 to 18, depending on interest
Time limit for each track: 4 1/2 minutes to 6 1/2 minutes, to be
determined based on number of participants.
Signup deadline: 11:59:59 pm eastern US time, Friday, March 18th, 2005
OR upon reaching 18 participants, whichever comes first.
Submission deadline: All materials must be in my hands before July
1st, 2006.

NO PREVIOUSLY RELEASED MATERIAL MAY BE SUBMITTED!

* Definition of "live performance recording": a recording of yourself,
either individually of as a member of an ensemble, playing music in
front of people. It does not have to be a commercial venue, or a huge
audience. The track you send DOES NOT have to be an accurate document
of your performance; you may edit for brevity, assemble the best parts
from a longer performance into one smoothly flowing track, even take
samples from several different performances recorded in different
venues. Conversely, if you have an unedited, "live to 2 track" piece
that fits the time allowance, that's fine too. If your track is a
group effort, please supply credits for all performers.

Extras: In order to facilitate the collation of the tracks,
contributors are encouraged to include as separate files along with
their tracks snippets of crowd noise, applause, heckling, amusing
performer/audience interaction, introductions and thank-you's, etc.
Also, any contributor who wishes to include a second track may do so.
There is no guarantee that this additional material will appear on the
final CD, but in the event that any contributor fails to honor their
commitment to the project, I'll have spare material to keep us on
deadline without having to resort to soliciting additional contributions.

It goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway: if you cannot abide by
the guidelines of the project, do not sign up. This applies both to
deadlines and to concept.

I am not equipped to accept electronic submissions. Please mail
submissions to:

Aim of this group: for each member to create a piece of music for a film - either for a non-existing imaginary film, or for an existing film, in this case, replacing its existing music.
28-Oct-04 Roger Harmar The twelve-tone dance project

This is a new project started in October 2004 and aims to combine twelve-tone techniques with dance music.

There is a mailing list at yahoo groups if you want to take part at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/twelvetonedance

and we also have a work in progress site for people to post mp3s of work in progress at:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/1/thetwelvetonedanceprojectmusic.htm

Here a full description of the project

The Twelve-tone dance project

This project is designed to see what happens if you take any kind dance music and apply twelve-tone techniques to its composition.

Any dance music can be used and there are hundreds to choose from - waltzes, sambas, drum n bass, highland reels, gavottes and so on. Wherever possible instrumentation should be the same as the dance music form you choose. So, for example, if you choose Morris dancing, the instrumentation would be an accordion, sticks and shouting. If you want to develop your own mutant dance music than please go ahead and do it. You must be able to dance to it at CT collective parties.

What you’ll need
You’ll need to know a bit about the dance music you choose, how it’s constructed and knowledge of twelve-tone composition. There are plenty of resources on the net describing the procedures.

Description of the technique can be found on the links page here

A tone row generator is here:
http://www.geocities.com/dan_cavanagh/matrix.htm

A sequencer - there are commercial, shareware and freeware ones. Useful for quickly writing and/or performing the music and scoring it if you’re going to play it live.

Length of tracks
Ideally the tracks should be between 30 secs and 4 minutes. I don’t want the tracks to outstay their welcome.

Final sound files
A minimum of stereo 16 bit 44khz wav or aif files. Mp3s are fine for work in progress but to be avoided when the tracks are finally mastered. However if for artistic reasons you want to do a Lo-fi track then that’s fine too.

A website for posting and listening to work in progress is here:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/1/thetwelvetonedanceprojectmusic.htm

Mail your tracks to
twelvetonedance@rogerharmar.net to have your tracks posted on this web site.

Deadlines
Ideally the project will finish on 30 April 2005 by which time all submissions should be complete.

Roger Harmar
07-Oct-04 Michael Peters Brand new CT Collective website

All CT projects are now listed, all tracks of all projects are there in mp3 format and can be either downloaded - or streamed, if you have a fast enough internet connection and can listen to mp3 streams.

Please let me know if you find any errors or have other comments.

Thanks to Morgan Hamilton Lang whose LoopXChange website was our home for the first years.
