stream this album stream album

NEMO 036
year: 2012

project coordinator:Rinus Van Alebeek
mastering: Rinus Van Alebeek
artwork:Rinus Van Alebeek

All songs are an interpretation of the theme "Domestic". The finished project was not distributed on CDRs as usual, but on audio cassettes which were individually designed by Rinus. Project description, from the original invitation:

"domestic.
But
see this theme also as an adjective, so as a point of departure
because it can refer to things/objects/situations/memories/ related to your life in and around your house
but also used as in
inland, like domestic flights

both possibilities are welcome"

1 David Cooper Orton
stream track Home is Where the Hearth is
Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing? I originally had plans to construct a complex sequence of comparisons between the various houses I've lived in over the years and what made them homes (or perhaps crucially didn't - places I never really settled etc) but then time drifted as it does and with the deadline looming, I used one of the tracks from my intended blues album as the background for a tour of our current home - very Viv Stanshall - how is a home more than the sum of our accumulated clutter and possessions? All the objects in some way contribute to a collected memory...or maybe I should restrain the urge to (over) explain...shut up and play the guitar...

An evocative and imaginative track. How do you do it so consistently DCO?

comment 27.01.2012: David Cooper Orton (www.davidcooperorton.co.uk)
thanks, Nick - no idea what I'd do without CT as an oulet!

David's track is the perfect opener for domestic.Aguide that shows us around his house. His guitar playing translates colors and moods. It reminded me of seventies open air copncerts with clouds of marihuana perfume above the heads. There is something of Captian Beefheart's Moonbeams and Bluejeans in it.

Gas and Electric is my favourite track, no doubt. It makes me wonder where and how Steve found and worked on these sounds. The power of it also makes me consider the track as an ode and monument to the industrial revolution that gave England for a long time a skyline chimney's and factory's.

no, not a synth :)

I guess this is an old analogue synth? Something like the Wasp? Intriguing! It left me in a catatonic state...

comment 25.01.2012: Michael Peters (www.michaelpeters.de)
an analog cat, rather :) his name is Muckel

  Go, cat, go!

comment 06.05.2012: Rinus Van Alebeek (www.zeromoon.com/rinus/)
There is a point of rest in every house. Cats can define this moment at its best. But what Michale does is to underline the fun factor of a cat,the moment you start to tease it, and the cat fakes it is asleep. Fun!

I admire Anders, he doesn't make music or sound art,but -really- plain art. I wonder if Anders is at all capableof doing something musically, which i mean in the utmost positive sense. His tracks, and also this one tell me everything about how he experiences music, and how he can find the surreal and absurd in what seems to be the most common. In fact a deeply religious attitude. Bravo! I am glad I have met you.

... love the sounds of the furnace, the fly, the mysterious mechanical sounds ...

Someone had to do it of course. If a theme is 'domestic' you should also hear a Musca domestica. The buzzing of the fly has this strange perspective shifting effect on this track.I like the combination of someone working in his garden house while humming to Sam Cooke's Chain gang. Maybe you don't hear it, I do.
6 Jeffrey Letterly
stream track Heart Like an Owl
Making the domestic exotic. A gamelan made from pots and pot lids.

lovely!!! it has all the charm of a Gamelan ensemble while sounding like from your kitchen. I wonder what the title is about ...

Ah yeah! Dream time, a world in cinemascope, sunset meets the king of siam, endless, endless.
7 Anton Mobin
stream track Vies à Vies
"Vies-à-Vies" is a preparatory study to the long-term project with the same name...
For 5 years, the project " Vies-à-Vies " consists of a collection of daily atmospheres and domestic sounds recorded in the windows of my apartment: the microphone outside, the body inside.

Two windows: the first one is due north, the other one due south in the last floor of a building without towards. Short and trivial recording of a sound, a movement, a vibration which calls during the day.

Sound recordings are classified according to this north / south criterion and leave apparaitre characteristics appropriate for each of the points of recording:
Northward, the window opens on a yard framed by buildings from which the first one is relatively far, the recordings all reveal a distant humming and a light echo. In the South, the street, the cars, people, of the noise... And the breakdown of the opposite building which leaves on the recording a heavy and variable breath...

In the assembly, sounds captured in the North are placed in the left channel, sounds captured in the South are in the right channel (without report in time)
The listener is in the center of a space understanding two opposite opened windows one of the other one (it also corresponds to my position in the room during the assembly).

The title " Vies-à-Vies " (Lives to lives) makes reference to the french words vis-à-vis which mean "towards".

Anton is so dedicated and talented, one day one of the doors will open and thousands of listeners will stream in. By that time, this little segment will be involved in a play of light and shadow, like all the other miniatures that together make up his portrait of an age in transgression.

comment 06.05.2012: Rinus Van Alebeek (www.zeromoon.com/rinus/)
This is mine. i just want to tell that the single parts of this track were recorded in the region around Berchtesgaden in the very deep south of Germany. Heimat means something else but home, being a combination of sentimental values, tradition, landscape, language, beer and wurst. And yes, somewhere hidden are also some sounds recorded in Braunau
